Dune: Part 3 Claim Analysis

Shortly after the success of the second part to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, I stumbled upon this post on my Instagram explore page. A post like this may seem legit, especially considering the verified account, however this is when it is important to put your media literacy skills to the test. What concerned me about this post was that there were no direct quotes or confirmation within the caption or image. This is when I investigated a bit further.

I proceeded to conduct a more thorough investigation by examining the account itself and examining the various claims that had been posted. During my search, I found a link in the bio to a website. While my initial impression suggested that the website was legitimate, further examination raised doubts about its credibility. Despite its outward appearance of authenticity, there were elements that failed to provide reassurance regarding the reliability of the site.

Upon clicking the link in the bio, I was directed to a specific webpage where an article was displayed at the top of the page. The content of this article caught my attention due to its lack of quotes or citations from other news outlets, interviews, or respectable sources. This absence of external references made it challenging to verify the credibility of the information presented within the article.

I decided to go straight to the source; the Legendary Studios website. I then typed into the search bar “Dune 3,” and still found nothing confirming this claim to be true.

Lastly, I searched on Safari “Denis Villeneuve Dune 3,” and that was when I found many articles making the same claim this Instagram account did. The screenshot above is from a Time article, which is a trusted news site and contained quotes from Denis as it was from an interview. This led me to believe what the “filmseal” account posted regarding Dune 3, to be true.

After digging deeper and applying my media literacy skills to this claim, I trust that this information is true. What led me to believe the claim, was not only the numerous articles stating the same thing, but the few articles I read that contained quotes from Denis. In today’s digital age, misinformation spreads rapidly across various online platforms. It is crucial for others to take the time to dig deeper in research when confronted with possible misinformation. By conducting thorough research, individuals can verify the accuracy of the information they come across and make informed decisions based on facts rather than falsehoods. Digging deeper allows one to cross-reference information from multiple reliable sources, which definitely helped me in distinguishing credible information and misinformation.

Additionally, researching extensively allows individuals to gain a deeper understanding of complex issues, critically analyze different perspectives, and develop a well-rounded knowledge base. This encourages critical thinking skills and promotes media literacy, empowering individuals to navigate the sea of information available online. All that being said, taking the time to dive into research when faced with potential misinformation is essential for making informed decisions, combating the spread of false information, and creating a more knowledgeable society.
