24-Hour Media Diet: Spotting Misinformation

Wednesday, March 20, 2024

6:35am: This morning I had to work at 7am, therefore I did not give myself time to check my social media platforms, however most days that is how I start my mornings.

9:15am: On my ten minute break, I checked all my social media apps to get all caught up. Most of the content I interact with is of fashion and fitness influencers on instagram. My favorite right now is Juniper. Fitness influencers on the other hand, can be a bit toxic and that is where I learn to become leery of what I am watching and dig deeper. I do not follow any fitness pages but they appear on my explore page quite often.

11:45am: Once I was off of work and home, I walked my dog and listened to Vampire Weekend’s first episode of their “Vampire Campfire” podcast. It was super fascinating to hear my favorite band discuss their music influences and early demos of their latest singles.

12:30pm: After my walk, I grabbed some lunch and then sat down to get some homework done. I always love to listen to movie scores while doing school, so today’s score was the Little Women (2019) score by Alexandre Desplat. I worked on my weekly discussion post for this course and got to interact with many educational articles highlighting the grip media misinformation has on society. One article in particular caught my attention about the misinformation spread in Africa. It was fascinating to learn about how the media spreads throughout other countries outside of our own and it essentially works the same way.

1:30pm: I decided to take a short social media break while doing my homework, and stumbled upon a cute top I liked and then that turned into a little bit of online shopping. I did not get the top because of how pricey it was, despite how much I loved it.

3:00pm: After completing my homework to-do list, I rewarded myself with an iced coffee and I walked to my favorite nearby park to swing. Swinging has become my favorite way to give myself a brain break from life. I usually listen to music while I swing, and today’s playlist was what I call music that feels like glitter, sparkles, and happiness. This playlist features artists like Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and Renee Rapp.

10:00pm: When I got home from dinner, I lied in my bed on my phone checking my social media apps once more before I actually went to sleep. I did not interact with much media today because I was preoccupied with homework and dinner with friends. I tend to stay away from news outlets and articles because I believe ignorance is bliss. The media I usually interact with is very fun and silly and meant for inspiration and creativity rather than education and awareness.
